FUNCTION OF THE POSITION:The Flight Simulator Engineer provides technical expertise and team skills necessary to maintain the high quality performance of flight simulation and related training devices. Performs preventative maintenance and problem resolution to ensure that CAPT flight simulation devices are in compliance with FAA requirements and pilot training needs. Will be involved in the acquisition, relocation, installation, operation, and management of a CAE MD90 EFD Level D Full Flight Simulator and will assist with the establishment of a simulator maintenance program and training of additional maintenance staff. Operates ATDs at all aircrew and instructor positions to evaluate operation of all systems. Analyzes and repairs discrepancies noted during preflight or reported by instructors or aircrew members. Visually inspects complete simulator (computer and peripheral) for loose connections, leaks and defective components. Accomplishes preventive maintenance functions on a continuous basis and replaces defective components as required. Performs overhaul of components as necessary. Coordinates maintenance activities to achieve maximum utilization of the trainers. Trouble-shoots malfunctions and isolates defective systems. Repairs, replaces, calibrates, adjusts and modifies trainer and computer components. Bench checks unserviceable units and determines need for adjustment or disassembly. Disassembles trainer assemblies and detects faulty parts and replaces with new or locally manufactured parts, reinstalls required equipment. Installs redesigned or additional components, reroutes existing wires or adds new wiring circuits, make program changes and loads program into the computers. Performs final calibration and functional tests. Education or Formal Training: High School diploma or equivalent and completion of a civilian or military basic electronic program are required. BSEE or BSME degree is highly desired. Experience: Three to five years experience as a flight simulator technician or equivalent is desired, with a demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex non-routine problems. Applicants will have at least 3 years experience in Simulator Maintenance and will have a comprehensive knowledge of full flight simulator maintenance practices, including hardware and software programming. A relevant qualification in Engineering would be a distinct advantage. The ability to interpret engineering drawing and electronic circuit diagrams and a thorough knowledge of aircraft systems operation, principles of flight and radio navigation theory is essential. The successful candidate will demonstrate effective communication skills (both written and verbal), will be detail conscious with strong diagnostic abilities, will have the ability to interpret a variety of information and instructions and be able to analyse and solve complex problems under pressure. Position Information: Provide solutions for software and hardware related aircraft and simulator systems discrepancies on flight training devices and full flight simulators. Provide software and hardware support to maintenance teams. Maintain high operational readiness status and FAA Qualification Tests. Guide compliance on training devices. Major Job Responsibilities: √ Define and/or develop required aircraft and/or simulator system software interfaces and modification approaches. √ Analyze, diagnose and implement required software engineering solutions for simulated aircraft and simulator systems discrepancies √ Assist maintenance staff as necessary in isolating hardware and/or software systems discrepancies √ Act as liaison with standards, FAA and other regulatory organizations √ Ensure that all simulator modifications are in compliance with established engineering department and corporate procedures and model FAA appropriate data √ Ensure that compliance with internal and FAA standards are maintained by outside vendors, contractors and manufacturers working on assigned flight training devices √ Document all aspects of software modification for internal tracking and FAA requirements Qualifications: Proficient in FORTRAN, C++ and other high level languages. Assembly language experience is a plus. Experience with FAA qualification grading and testing process desired. BS in appropriate disc and/or equivalent skill and experience in software/hardware modifications and design. Three to nine years in technical field, preferably aviation related.
